Is It Possible For Both Ultrasound And MRI To Miss A Fibroid In The Scan?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: I had gone to a doctor as I had been spotting. Transvaginal US was done and showed thickened endometrium with cystic changes. MRI scan was also done within couple of days. Everything is normal except says mildly thickened endometrium. Then D&C was done within a week's time. They found a submucous fibroid of 1.5 cm. Is it possible for both Ultrasound and MRI to miss a fibroid in the scan? I guess that MRI is most accurate. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Hysteroscopy gives a direct view of the uterus and is the most accurate. MRI's can miss things occasionally.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing..
I understand your concern..

There are many cases where scan and MRI misses a small fibroid with size 1.5cm.. Yes, MRI should have picked up but I think it might have been missed..

Hysteroscopy is direct view inside the uterus.. This gives a direct view inside the uterus so small submucous fibroid could be picked up and resected.. Followed by this D and c was done.. Result of this further confirms whether there is any problem..

So don't worry.. Hysteroscopy is always better than MRI and more reliable..

Hope I have answered your query..Feel free to ask any doubts.. good day
