Is Heart Rate Of 160 Bpm Normal?

default
Posted on Mon, 25 Jan 2016
Question: I am a 63 year-old competitive rower, wondering about a safe heart rate at which to condition. Using one method, my XXXXXXX HR should be 157; the other method (Tanaka) allows me 164. So my target HR at 85% is in the 135-140 range. Lately, I've been in a gym doing stairs and cycling, doing 10-minute pieces. 135 HR is pretty light; 157 is only a medium effort. About 8 minutes into each piece, I push it to 175-180 to finish each piece, holding about 160 through most of the 10 minutes. I feel that if I'm not pushing at least that hard I will score pretty low on all our crew erg tests, and will not be competitive. Yet I read articles that indicate that this is unsafe. True or false?

Brief Answer:
Reduce or avoid concomitant Omesar.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.

Cialis (Tadalafil) generally increases effects of Omesar (Olmesartan) by pharmacodynamic synergism.

So there exists a potential for interaction. It is necessary to monitor your blood pressure monitor as there is a risk for hypotension.

A rationale approach would be to decrease (or even avoid) the dose of Omesar when programming to use Cialis.

All the judgment will depend on your blood pressure values.

Sorry about this unexpected mistake, please see below:

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I am sorry about the mistake that happened.

You have received the wrong response.

Your answer is as follows:

Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that theoretical maximal heart rate is an approximate measure drawn by averaging a large number of normal individuals.

It is true that heart rate is one of the most important determinant of myocardial oxygen consumption.

In individuals at risk for myocardial ischemia, it would not be wise to push to such heart rates, as it could trigger dangerous ischemic myocardial suffering.

But, this is not your case. As you are a competitive rower, highly trained for a long time, the risk for precipitating such a complication almost doesn’t exist.

You skeletal and myocardial muscle is satisfactorily conditioned to physical strain, developing compensatory mechanisms to assure a sufficient blood supply even on extreme exertion.

There are several predictors of the maximal and average theoretical heart rate in a certain individual (the degree of muscle conditioning to physical exertion, level of hemoglobin, vital lung capacity, muscular and body mass, level of hydration, physical environment where the exertion is done, level of cutaneous perspiration, psychological involvement, etc.).

The heart rate around 160 bpm is not considered dangerous facing your physical profile and considering those limited 10 min intervals.

My advice would be to follow a gradually increasing physical engagement with supervised escalating work load, just to leave your body the necessary space (time) to activate those wonderful compensatory mechanisms I mentioned above.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of further uncertainties, do not hesitate to ask me again!

Wishing you all the best for the New Year!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
