Is Draining Of Cyst On Neck A Permanent Solution To The Problem?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: PLEASE SEE NEW QUESTIONS BELOW THIS PARAGRAPH If a simple cysts is drained from the neck, does that mean it is gone? Also, if one primary care doctor says the biopsy results are good, why would an ent specialist say it is inconclusive? Does that mean its bad? What could cause an inconclusive report? I am so concerned for my daughter. Her appt is Aug. 12th with the ENT...

I HAD WRITTEN TO YOU PREVIOUSLY ON ISSUE ABOVE. An Endocrinologist said though other tests indicated no cancer (What type of tests would these be?) the doctor recommended that my daughter have thyroid (partial or all) removed. She said she could wait up to a year and my daughter plans (she is 48) to have the surgery in November. I am worried this is too long to wait. The mass was drained but I am still concerned if she waits that long it could be a possibly more serious problem. Don't you think she should have it out sooner? Please reply to all my questions. Thank You, XXXXXXX Chupinski

Brief Answer:
Drainage is the treatment of many cysts but its outcome is variable.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Generally drainage is the treatment of many cysts but its outcome is variable.
Some cysts may reappear as its wall is not excised during drainage.Cyst wall may be the source of continuous fluid secretion.

Inconclusive biopsy report may need another biopsy.Inconclusive report may be due to many causes like inadequate biopsy material, blood mixed sample, inappropriate technique of staining etc.
We can't take chance. It is always necessary to exclude malignancy,so I suggest for repeat biopsy.
Biopsy report will guide further management.

There are many features in high resolution ultrasound that is helpful in diagnosis.Clinical findings, high resolution ultrasonograhy and biopsy will guide further management. These can indicate that you should wait or need immediate surgery for your daughter.

As stated in first question...do you think it is safe to wait for surgery till November? Also you did not tell me what types of other tests can be used to see if there is cancer and the ones the endocrinologist was referring to?
Thank you

My daughter was told she should have all or partial thyroid removed so it won’t be serious down the line.
She said the doctor told her that the biopsy showed no cancer. The doctor said they did over 100 test to check for it. Do you know what type of tests they are? She wants to have surgery in November and the doctor said she could wait up to a year. Do you think its too long to wait though the cyst was drained but she had had it 10 years. I hope she will not be waiting to long to do this. I wanted to have her have it done sooner but she is going along with what the doctor said. I am extremely concerned. Thank You. Sincerely,
doctor

Brief Answer:
There is nothing serious as biopsy reports are negative.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

As biopsy reports are negative,I don't think there is any thing serious.
You can follow your doctors' suggestion.
Now a days, extra precaution is taken as surgical removal of mass based on clinical findings, ultrasound and biopsy report. After surgical removal, she may need thyroid supplementation.
Doctor referred so many tests most likely regrading biopsy study.
