Is Chest Pain While Bending Down A Symptom Of Anxiety?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Mar 2016
Question: Hi. I have pain in left chest when walking esp jogging since 2 days most of the time. It started with chest pain when bending down. Sometimes at rest also. Also experience mild palm pain and above elbow pain sometimes in left hand. I had an ekg in august '15 which was normal. And had a 2d echo in october'15 ordered by ent which was normal too. My shoulder and left back pain too sometimes. Just worried. Is this just anxiety? Just went for walk and had left center chest pain while walking and not while standing. Had to breathe deeply. Wanted to check. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
My opinion is that this is just anxiety

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I carefully read your query.

The facts, as they stand, are that you are of female sex and 31 years of age. These are two very important protecting facts, regarding heart diseases. In addition to this, you recently (in less than 2 years) had a normal EKG and echo cardiogram.

Chest pain originated from the heart, is called angina and it comes from blockages situated within the coronary arteries (vessels that encompass the heart as a crown - hence the name in latin - which supply the heart with oxygen and other nutrients. This kind of pain - angina - is not generated during rest and is not originated or changed in character/intensity during changes in position or breathing cycle. Everyone may experience discomfort in the chest while exercising or changing position, due to changes within the ribcage pressure, even myself. These often come as stabbing, tingling pain that comes and goes or lasts for a few seconds. Some people, including you, translate this pain into a sense of fear (anxiety) to "is this happening to me?" "what is happening to me?" "is my heart doing this to me?".
I would reassure you that, with the facts you provided, there is nothing to worry about and I would encourage you to continue with your physical activity. If something would be wrong now, it would have been shown on your previous exams you underwent.

I hope this is helpful. Feel free to ask follow-up questions, as I would be happy to help.

My kindest regards,
Dr. Meriton

Thanks for your answer doctor. Sometimes I do feel shortness of breath and weakness in legs, lightheaded, feel heart beat and heaviness in lower chest, trouble swallowing. I guess this must be anxiety as you mentioned.Wanted to check with you. Thank you so much.

Welcome back.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

I am glad I could be of help. It is anxiety as these are symptoms produced by excess adrenalin levels in the organism while one is experiencing anxiety.

Wish you the best. Please rate the answer
