Is Blood In Semen A Sign Of Prostate Cancer?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Mar 2016
Question: I am noticing blood in my semen. It has looked like a dried deposit but recently there is more general discolorization. I have found online that this could be indicative of prostate cancer. I am 61 years old and generally healthy. I have noticed in recent years that my blood does not clot as readily as it used to.

Brief Answer:
It needs proper evaluation to search the cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
Blood in semen in young patient is mostly due to some non serious cause and disappear it self within few days.

But blood in semen in old age male required proper evaluation.

Any infection, inflammation, trauma or tumor in genital tract can leads to blood in semen.

Please give me following details.

-Do you have any trauma to genital tract?
-Do you have any recent procedure like prostate biopsy or cystoscopy or other?
-Do you have hypertension?
-Do you have any bleeding disorder or you are taking any blood thinner medicine?
-Do you have pain at urination or burning sensation while urination?
-Do you have any fever or other symptoms?

Most of the time it is due to some infection, inflammation or trauma. But we should also rule out the rare major cause like prostate cancer or other tumor.

For that you should go for urine examination, PSA level and ultrasound abdomen. It will rule out or diagnose most of the causes.

Then you should start treatment according to the cause.

Please give me the follow up with details so that I can help you further.

Hope I have answered your question.
