Is Regesterone A Contraceptive Pill?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Mar 2017
Question: Hello Doctor,
I am XXXX here. I had a d&c last month at 10 weeks.. The baby died at 8 weeks. I have been advised to take regesterone tablets from 14 to 24th of cycle days for next 3 months. I have read online that it is a form of contraceptive pill. But the doctor told that it is not so. And I can try to conceive. Can you please explain. Is it true that it prevents ovulation?. Why was I prescribed this medicine?. My periods were always regular and I dont have any other problem. My age is 29

Brief Answer:
Regesterone is not a contraceptive.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Regesterone is a synthetic progesterone pill and it is given to have regular periods. It is not a contraceptive pill. You can try for conception while taking Regesterone but it is best to wait for 3 months for your body to recover well before trying for next pregnancy. if your periods have always been regular then you can even avoid taking regesterone but it is best to use a contraceptive for next 3 months.

Thank you Doctor for your prompt reply.
The doctor who prescribed me these tablets told me to start trying to conceive in the next cycle itself... So if I trying to conceive, are these tablets safe?.. I don't want to try and be anxious for positive result.. If these tablets are given to actually delay pregnancy, then I don't want to try and feel dejected

Brief Answer:
Tablets not needed if you want to conceive soon.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If you are trying to conceive then it is best to avoid taking these hormonal tablets. These do not have any adverse effect on the conception or the ability to conceive but these can be avoided and are not needed for conception. These are only to regularize the cycles.
Hope my answer is helpful.
