Question: Hi, I have had a prostate biopsy over a year ago, it showed that I had the beginning of cancerous cells. Watchful waiting showed that the PSA reading was relatively low (around 40). The doctor told me that the cancer cells were dormant up to 3 months ago. Now I feel pressure down below and wonder what could be happening.

Brief Answer: Repeat the PSA test. Detailed Answer: H, Thanks for the query. I agree that watchful waiting is an option in very selected cases of prostate cancer. However the PSA level that you mentioned (40) is very high. What was the Gleason's score on the prostate biopsy? Waiting is an option only for low grade prostate cancer. If you are experiencing symptoms, it is time to repeat the PSA test and also to undergo imaging for the prostate such ad MRI to know the exact status of the disease. Regards

I made an error, the PSA level was around 4.9 to 5.3, never higher, but I will get a new test asap. I now have suddenly bad pain in my lower back. Could that be related to the cancer?

Brief Answer: Let us wait for the results. Detailed Answer: Hi. Thanks for the query. The symptom could be related. Please undergo an Alkaline phostase estimation. If it is elevated, you may need to undergo a bone scan
