Posted on Wed, 28 Dec 2016
Question: Hello Doctor Thank you I am actually asking about a condition that my long-term boyfriend has been being treated for for one year. I asked him to ask them a diagnosis they sent back Pancytopenia which I found very wide ranging and unhelpful. They have been unhelpful and in face negative. I have a daughter with Lenox Gasteaut Syndrome so I am accustomed to getting information can you fill me in and I am also asking Jessica's Neurologist 4 a local referral. Thanx

Brief Answer:
Bone marrow examination is required to know the cause of pancytopenia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on Health Care Magic.

Pancytopenia is not a disease but it indicates an underlying disease process.
Pancytopenia refers to decreased production of all three lineage of blood cells i.e. red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

The cause for pancytopenia can be due to decreased production of blood cells or destruction of blood cells.

The supplements which are being given is to alleviate the symptoms caused by pancytopenia, however, they are not definitive treatment of pancytopenia.

A bone marrow aspiration and bone biopsy are the investigations required to determine the possible cause of pancytopenia.

I suggest you to consult a hematologist for clinical assessment and bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.

Regarding Lenox Gasteaut syndrome, I would like to add that it is a type of epilepsy and it is not known to be associated with pancytopenia.
