Question: Hi! Is it normal to see your pulse in the base of your neck right above the notch between the collar bones. I am a 28 year old female 5'7 190lbs.My blood pressure is normal 120/80 resting heart rate between 60-70 bpm. No symptoms. I was just reading an article and it says you should NOT be able to see your pulse in the base of your neck and I defiantly can see mine and now am worried. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Sometimes it could be normal

Detailed Answer:
in some people it may be visible. But prominent visible pulsation seen in the anterior aspect of Neck especially in sitting or standing posture may suggest some heart issues and needs work up. it means pressures inside heart have raised or heart beat is irregular. you should have an ECG, Echo and some blood tests done like Hemoglobin levels and serum creatinine and TSH. if all these basic tests are normal then there is no concern. if anything abnormal it may need further testing and treatment.

I just had all My blood work done for my annual 4 months ago and all those you mentioned were normal. It doesn't pulsate out of my next I can just see my pulse in the area at the base of my neck.

What does visible pulsation inthe anterior aspect of the neck mean? Where is that and what does it mean?

Brief Answer:
Then it's likely to be normal

Detailed Answer:

There are arteries and veins there which can become visible if engorged or heart beats are forceful. also when there is enlargement of structure above these also can cause visible pulsation such as lymph node due to infection or lipoma.
If there are no other symptoms it's generally likely to be normal finding. But however if it's recent onset or any other symptoms it's better to have echocardiogram done.
