What Causes Heart Palpitations And Sweating After Taking Methamphetamine And Alprazolam Soon After?

Question: I'm a former meth addict, been clean for 5 years. I found some dropped by someone and have held onto it for many weeks, not using it. I figure that I would keep it on hand in case the end of days were to happen. Well, tonight, I slipped and decided to verifiy by taste nd possible snort it. I was weak. I made out 3 small lines after testing and verified it was methamphetamine. a few minutes passed and I saw the error of my decisions. I flushed the bag down the toilet and spray wiped the counter off. The drug started to take affect from the very low dose. I had cleaned my house(which I have been putting off for about 6 months.) Then the anxiety kicked in.

I suffer from GAD and have huge death anxiety moments, so I am prescribed 1mg alprazolam (which I usually take half a dose of that for any upcoming attacks.)

I took the half dose and waited for 20 minutes... I started having a raised heart rate and sweated profusely. I had the death attack coming on. I then took another half dose. I feel a bit calmer now.

My question is, am I going to be ok? I realize this was a very poor decision and I just need some sort of advice when taking these two chemicals so close in intervals.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that methamphetamine use is totally responsible for the unpleasant effects you have experienced: a raised heart rate, excessive seating, etc.

By decreasing dopamine and norepinephrine breakdown inside the neuronal cells and increasing their concentrations in the synaptic space they produce many effects including the above.

On the other side, Alprazolam by increasing sedation tries to counteract the euphoric state produced by methamphetamine.

Seems that this new experience with meth is overcome with minimal side effects.

I strongly recommend stopping the dangerous experience with methamphetamine as it may lead to more serious adverse effects such as:

- seizure,
- psychotic disorder,
- cardiorespiratory arrest,
- sudden death,
- myocardial infarction,
- cerebrovascular accident,
- Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome,etc.

Methamphetamine may have an adverse effect on high blood pressure and you generalized anxiety disorder as well.

So, my advice is to never use methamphetamine again.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

In case of further uncertainties do not hesitate to ask me!

Greetings!

Dr. Iliri
