How Safe Is Pull Out Method?

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Oct 2014
Question: About 5 weeks ago I had sex with a woman who claimed she was on birth control. I used the pull out method and I am certain that I avoided ejaculating in her. The next day she told me she was not on birth control but that she had started her period that day. She is a 38 year old woman who is a daily smoker. This week she notified me that she was late for her period. I asked her to take a pregnancy test and tell me the result but she refuses and only states that its not my problem. What are the odds that she got pregnant from me and what are the odds (if she is pregnant) that she will successfully carry a baby full term without adverse effects to the fetus?

Brief Answer:
Please see a specialist for clarification.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

In the current scenario, you should take the woman to a specialist for a clinical evaluation to clarify the situation. Since the history given has so many fluctuations, it is difficult to say whether any pregnancy has occurred or not.

Firstly, if she was on birth control regularly, it is rare to conceive. Secondly, if she had a period at the time of the intercourse, pregnancy cannot happen even if it was an ovulatory cycle since this was the safe period. So, it is advisable to get clarification through proper clinical evaluation.

In case of a missed period, a home pregnancy test or a blood test for pregnancy should give the proper status; a trans-vaginal sonogram would help further.

Hope I have clarified your query. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

regards,

Dr. XXXXXXX Vennam,

I truly appreciate your help. She later told me that she had not been on birth control at all for some time but she assured me that the very next day she started her period. Since then I had not heard from her for several weeks because she was acting irrationally. She is attempting to say that she is now pregnant and that it must be mine. I completely understand the 100% way to be sure the child is mine is through DNA testing. I am certain that at most a minimal amount of pre-ejaculation may have been released although I am fairly certain I was cautious. I guess I am attempting to reaffirm that if she started her period the next day that any pregnancy could not be the result of me. Again, any information you could share would lighten the burden and fear I am experiencing.

Respectfully,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Pregnancy is unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing back.

If she had a period the next day, it is impossible to get pregnant due to an intercourse the day before. It is true that pre-ejaculate can cause conception in an unprotected intercourse at the time of ovulation. Ovulation occurs two weeks prior to the onset of the next menstrual period and as such, she was in the safe period when this happened since she claimed to have had a period the next day.

Hope I have clarified your query. Please get back if you need more information. I will be available to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
