How Long Does It Take To Heal Gastritis?

Question: How long does intake to heal gastritis? My doctor put me on 60 mg Dexilant 1X a day and Sucralfate 4X a day after diagnosing me with gastritis after an endoscopy. I have no H. pylori or celiac disease.

I've been on the Dexilant, Sucralfate, and a diet of milk, and peas with margarine for 14 days with no relief. How long before I should start feeling better?

Brief Answer:
if acute symptoms will improve within few days of treat

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

Gastritis is the inflammation of stomach mucosa due to :

- foods /drinks consumed constantly including coffee, alcohol or energetic drinks, etc.

- H.pylori infection. You are reporting not to have it for the moment. I was reviewing your other posts and noted that you have been treated for this infection recently. It means that time is needed to improve your symptoms unless repetitive H.pylori infection.

- medications you've been taking to eradicate h.pylori can also aggravate gastritis symptoms

In your case, we should evaluate if we are dealing with an acute gastritis attack or it has already become chronic.

Taking all these into account, I advise to discuss with your doctor to
- run another testing for h.pylori.
- increase the dose of dexilant
- continue following the bland diet for gastritis

Hope it was of help!

I assume my gastritis is chronic since my endoscopy 14 months ago also showed I had gastritis. So, should I still have hope that I will get better even though the Dexilant and bland diet haven't helped in 14 days? I'm very discouraged.

Thank you very much for your help!

Brief Answer:
Patience is needed as following...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

1. Usually, within the first 4-8 weeks of starting treatment, you'd see improvement.

2. The very first thing is to exclude H.pylori infection. That will finalize the success of the treatment.

3. Next, have you run abdominal ultrasound so far? Other GI problems should be excluded apart gastritis.

You should be patient and try to follow the treatment and bland diet rigorously.

Wish fast recovery!
