Dear Doctor, In answer to your question about what was eaten, it was a grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce and a slice of tomato and a slice of cheese. Presently he doe s not complain of a fever or chills, no nausea. He does admit to increasing belly cramps and bloody, watery stools. He had his last dose of prescription Imodium this morning. He very tired and spending his time resting in bed. He continues to take small amounts of Gatorade regularly and is passing urine. Should he take OTC Imodium as he has finished the prescription? Do you have any recommendations?

Dear XXXX,this is most probably a campylobacter food poisoning . it should take from 2-10 days to resolve. In the meanwhile he should continue on the Imodium until the diarrhea stops. he is doing right by taking Gatorade to avoid dehydration and electrolyte imbalance as a result from diarrhea . I recommend that he starts an antibiotic to fasten his cure as azythromycin 500 mg every 8 hours for 3 days. I hope I answered your question .

Resistance to amoxicillin is high

Dear XXXX, amoxicillin can be used in treatment of campylobacter but there is high rate of resistance of this type of bacteria against amoxicillin which makes its effect suboptimal . if azithromycin is not available then you can use amoxicillin . but you should expect a weaker effect.
