default
Posted on Mon, 18 Jul 2016
Question: Good Evening: I just found out from my GYN doctor that I have Trichomonas. I have picked up antibiotics to take for the next 7 days, but I want to understand how this disease is transmitted, and exactly what I am dealing with. I have told my boyfriend that he also needs to be checked out.

Brief Answer:
Some information about trichomoniasis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Ok -I'll tell you a bit about trichomoniasis. It's the most common, curable, sexually transmitted disease. It is strictly spread via sexual contact. And only about 1/3 of the time do people of either gender with trichomoniasis have symptoms.

It's hard to know when you got it. When people get symptoms, they usually occur within 1 month of being infected - but not always. Sometimes people start to get symptoms much later, and sometimes symptoms come and go.

Diagnosis is made with a swab/culture. Diagnosis can not be made on symptoms alone.

It's curable with antibiotics. Metronidazole or tinidazole are effective in treating trichomoniasis which is caused by a protozoa.

You and your partner should wait until completion of the antibiotics and complete resolution of symptoms (if any) before resuming intercourse. And yes, he should be tested for it too.

In someone who is not child bearing, the main problem with trichomoniasis is that it causes inflammation or the urogenital tissues which can increase the chance of getting HIV if exposed to it. With antibiotic treatment, this resolves and the increased risk of receiving/spreading HIV goes away.

I hope this information answers your questions. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
