Had I-pill. Resulted In Irregular Period. No Pregnancy Symptoms. Did I Have Implantation Bleeding?

Posted on Mon, 10 Sep 2012
Question: Hello all.
I've had the I-Pill 3 times in my life. First time was in late January 2011 and the 2nd was on early April 2011. And my period cycle was irregular all the while. Most recently I took the I-Pill was on October 8th 2011 after having sex with my Boyfriend. My last period ended on October 4th 2011 which lasted for 5 days from September 30th to October 4th.

Then, I had another period from October 15th to 19th. And after that, I did not have any periods till today, that is, January 29th 2012. I've always had irregular periods but, the time never exceeded more than 3 months. I am in my 4th month now without any periods.

Then, I thought I might be pregnant. But, I am not going through any single pregnancy symptom. I am going for a pregnancy blood test soon but, I doubt it would be positive. My main concern is, by taking the I-Pill more often like I did, does it cause a woman to have very irregular periods? In October 2011, I had my periods twice, but after October, I didn't have my periods even once. And yeah I am 23 years old as of now. Please give me some advice. Thanks in advance. :(

Additional Observations:
From last night, many different thoughts have been running through my mind. Like, am I really pregnant? But, From my 4 months of no period cycles, I did not experience a single pregnancy symptom at all. And the period cycle which I had during October 15th to 19th is definitely not Implantation Bleeding, because it seemed and felt like a very normal period cycle which I usually have and it lasted for 5 days as usual. And the symptoms of implantation bleeding which I read online does not match the pattern of bleeding I experienced during October 2011 at all. My only worry is that I have not had my period cycles after October 19th till today, though I have no symptoms of pregnancy at all, I am still worried if at all I am pregnant. I will be going for the blood tests which was recommended to me soon to confirm the issue. But, from scientific point of view, considering my situation and bodily state. Am I really pregnant? Thanks in advance for your patience and in time.

Thanks

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The early period that you had during 15-19th october is most likely a withdrawal bleeding due to taking I-pill. Consumption of I-pill only thrice that too three months ago is not likely to cause such a prolonged amenorrhea.
Pregnancy is a possibility if there is a history of unprotected sex after 19th october.
The other reasons of delayed periods may be hormonal imbalance, emotional upset, anxiety, stress, or other medical conditions that affect the ovaries, uterus, hypothalamus, or pituitary gland. Hypothyroidism, post pill amennorhea , polycystic ovarian syndrome or less frequently a pituitary tumor causing high prolactin levels or a hypothalamic disease are other causes that may be the cause after the pregnancy is ruled out.
Please visit your gynecologist to undergo physical check up and also to undergo relevant investigations required in your case to find out the cause so that treatment can be given accordingly.
Hope this answers your query. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.

Wishing you good health.

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX Tayal,

Thank you very much for your reply. I do have a few doubts after your answer, please clarify them for me.

1) I did not have sex at all after October 8th 2011. And as per my situation, I did have my early period cycle from October 15th to 19th thanks to the i-Pill. Does withdrawal bleeding mean that I am pregnant or does it rule out pregnancy completely? And I am still pretty sure that it was not implantation bleeding as none of the signs match at all.

2) Also, if I am indeed pregnant. This should be my 4th month running. But, from the 1st month till now there has not been a single symptom of pregnancy at all. I have gone through about 20 symptoms about pregnancy and my physical condition does not even match with 1 symptom. Would I still be pregnant?

3) I am going for a pregnancy test tomorrow. I will definitely keep you updated about my situation.

Thanks for your time and patience

Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
1) From October 15th-19th you had an early period. This rules out the pregnancy.
2) If you do not have any symptoms of pregnancy then your chances of being pregnant are very low.
3) Thanks for keeping me updated. I will try my best to guide you as per the situation.
Hope my answer is helpful.
