Does The Urine Routine Test Indicate UTI?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 May 2014
Question: I want to check the results of a urine routine test, which my 4 months pregnant wife aged 28 yrs recently had. Following are the worrying points:
Albumin - trace present;
pus cells - 5 to 6 per hpf
epithelial test - 10 to 12
Is she having a UTI? What other tests she can undergo to rule out/confirm the same?

Brief Answer:
ABOVE PARAMETERS ARE NORMAL IN PREGNANCY.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Above parameters are QUITE NORMAL in routine urine test during pregnancy. It DOESN'T indicate Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) unless she is SYMPTOMATIC. In that case, one urine culture is required to confirm the diagnosis. Otherwise, you have NOTHING to worry with this report.

Significant bacteriuria (in urine culture) - more than 100,000 colony forming units/ ml of urine in clean-catch midstream urine (two consecutive specimens) - INDICATIVE of UTI.

Hope, this information is quite helpful to you. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish her good health and successful motherhood.

Regards,
Dr Soumen
