Brief Answer:
Next natural period may get delayed.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

Presuming that you have regular 28-30 day cycles, you had intercourse during the fertile or ovulatory period. Yet, you are amply protected since you have taken the emergency pill soon after.

As the emergency pill contains excess hormone, it can cause hormonal imbalance in the body thereby inducing withdrawal bleeding within a week of the pill intake and subsequent delayed natural cycle. Your next natural period may get delayed by a week or two.

If you do not see your next normal period even after ten days after it is due, please see a specialist for further evaluation.

Hope your query has been clarified. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

Brief Answer:
Not necessarily seen always.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

It is not necessary that you see the withdrawal bleed always. You should get an assessment if you do not see your next natural period even ten days after it is due. Else, you can get an estimation of the serum beta-hCG titres to exclude/confirm pregnancy three weeks after the intercourse.

Hope your doubt has been cleared. Please get back if you need any more information. I will be ready to help.

Brief Answer:
Please get a clinical evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing again.

If you did see your natural period, but, did not bleed as much, it is better if you get a proper clinical evaluation now. This is to rule out any hormone imbalance and/or pregnancy, though being a remote possibility. A trans-vaginal sonogram would be of much use.

Hope your query has been answered. Please contact if you need any more information. I will be available to help.

Answered by Dr. Shanti Vennam (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
prefer trans-vaginal sonogram

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

I would prefer trans-vaginal sonogram as it can exclude/confirm pregnancy and also allow to see the status of the pelvic organs at the same time. A pregnancy test, on the contrary, can deal with identifying a pregnancy but if negative, cannot tell anything else. It may be done, but, should always be accompanied by the sonogram for a better clarification.

Hope I have clarified your doubt. Please contact if you need any more information. I will be happy to help.

Brief Answer:
Should have happened.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

Intake of an emergency pill usually delays a natural period by a week or two. In view of this, you should see your period any time now. Since you already had some spotting a week ago, it remains to be seen whether it was a breakthrough or something else. A clinical examination and as mentioned earlier, a trans-vaginal sonogram help to sort out the situation.

Hope your query has been clarified. Please contact if you need any more information. I will be available to help.
