Does Consumption Of Caffeine And Citrus Foods Worsen Urinary Infection?

default
Posted on Thu, 10 Mar 2016
Question: I am concerned because I get frequent UTI's. My question is; my doctor told me not to drink anything that has caffeine nor any citrus products and a friend said his doctor told him he could drink these products. How do you feel about this? Alright to drink or avoid?

Brief Answer:
caffeine and citrus fruits are known to cause bladder irritation

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

There are certain foods that are known to irritate the bladder including caffeine and citrus foods.

This is the reason that these foods are avoided in patients with a history of chronic bladder inflammation due to infections or other causes.
Also avoided in persons with conditions such as interstitial cystitis.

There is a comprehensive list of foods/drinks that may irritate the bladder on XXXXXXX clinic website if you search for foods that may irritate or inflame the bladder.

It may be best to at least reduce the use of caffeine/citrus to see if it helps. You may not need to eliminate completely but reduce intake.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
