default
Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: I've one more question. As per my recent thyroid tests, TSH, T3, T4 all are in normal range but my TPO (thyroid perxidase antibodies) is very high i.e. 203 which should have been under 9. Would you please let me know how can i reduce the TPO level? can selenium intake helps in reducing this level? If yes, how much should I take in the form of supplement?

Brief Answer:
Yes some research has proved so; 200 μg/day

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. TPO is more of an indicator of a disease (namely Hashimoto's thyroiditis) than an individual marker. It is as antibody which when found to be higher than normal in an individual is used to confirm a diagnosis of Hashimoto's.

Yes, selenium has found to help reduce TPO levels and so have other thyroid supplements. It would be best to consult your doctor who would calculate and advice you on the right amount of selenium based on various factors like diet, lifestyle, etc; but the recommended dose is about 200 μg/day for 3 months to a year sir.

I hope you find my response helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.
