Can A Dental Procedure Lead To Oromandibular Dystonia?

default
Posted on Fri, 30 May 2014
Question: I was just diagnosed with Oromandibular Dystonia and I would like to know if this can be caused by a dental procedure? I had my upper and 1 lower tooth removed March 2013. Since then I have had great difficulty talking and eating and it is progressively getting worse.

Brief Answer:
No this can not occur because of extraction

Actually Oromandibular Dystonia is a condition in which the muscles of jaw has involuntary spasm. It means there will be unwanted movement of jaw and tongue.
It is a neurological condition which might have occurred because of chemical reaction of any drug.
So it can not occur because of tooth extraction, because if at there is any trauma at the time of extraction, it can cause numbness of nerve or moreover problem in Temporomandibular joint ( joint of jaws).
You should visit a good neurologist who will diagnose the condition properly and treat it accordingly.
Hope it will help you.
Thank you.

I find this very difficult to believe, because I had perfect speech and bite and was able to eat until the very day I had my upper teeth and 1 lower molar removed. Since then I can NOT eat any very solid food because I can't chew the food before my tongue wants to push the food to the back of my throat so I am afraid of choking. I am unable to speak properly and I have no control of my tongue. I an be understood if I clinch my teeth to talk but that is very painful and my tongue will not allow me to keep my mouth closed for a very long period of time. In addition, I do have a good fit with my teeth but it is painful for me to wear my teeth because of the pain it causes to my jaw. It feels as though my upper jaw is in a vice which just seems to get tighter and tighter so I am only able to wear my teeth for very short periods of time (less than an hour at a time). My facial muscles are very distressed when I speak and I have no control of my tongue. Additionally I get headaches when i have my teeth in but as soon as I remove them the headache goes away. This had had an extreme life changing affect on me therefore I don't believe that this is the correct diagnosis. Do you?

Brief Answer:
Can be a Temporomandibular joint disorder.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, XXXXXXX
Thank you for consulting with HCM.
This is Dr. Dipti Singh here to answer your query.

After observing your history and symptoms it looks that when you had your tooth removed , it can be possible that it has caused excessive exertion to your jaw joint called as temporomandibular joint, as it is responsible for opening, closing and various movements of jaws.
It even causes pain while chewing and pain the teeth area and headache.
Better that once you should visit a good dentist (Oral Surgeon) and get your Temporomandibular joint completely examined.
It can also be possible that this is problem which is leading to these symptoms because just an extraction of tooth can not cause a Oromandibular Dystonia.

Hope it will help you
Thank you.
