Can Zyrtec Be Taken For Hives?

Question: I am having swelling of my lips and a couple of other places on my body, I have had hives before and have a prescription for Zyrtec from 2008. Is it still good?

I have gone through your query. Your problem can be most likely Urticaria (hives). This can be due to allergic reaction to some thing you exposed. Zyrtec (cetirizine) is helpful for this. If the pill is from 2008 it could have finished the expiry date. Just check for the expiry date before using it. You can use over the counter antihistamines like benadryl if zyrtec is not available. Applying calamine lotion will be helpful also. If severe itching or discomfort in throat or respiratory discomfort then approach ER for corticosteroid shots.
