Can Aleve Tablet Taken For Back Pain Cause Miscarriage?

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Sep 2014
Question: Hi, I have had 2 miscarriages in the past 2 years. The first was at 5 1/2 months, the second at 12 weeks. There was no reason to why the first one happened but I was told the second one could have happened because of a blood clotting disorder I might have (runs in the family) and my OB told me that when I miscarried the last time I had severe blood clotting.
I am currently 8 weeks pregnant now. I am in the military and have flat feet so I have a lot of back pain, I have been taking 2 aleve per day for the last 3 days and at my appt with my OB today I told her and she said that there is a possibility I could miscarry again. I have stopped taking aleve but am still worried. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Not likely to cause miscarriage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Aleve can cause an increased tendency to bleed. Taking it only for few days does not increase your chances of miscarriage considerably.
You can get an ultrasound scan done to find out if the fetal heart beat has appeared and if there are any retroplacental clots or subchorionic hemorrhage present.
Right now it is best to start with Vitamin C and folic acid supplements to decrease the bleeding tendencies. Please do not worry. Taking Aleve for 3 days only will not make much difference.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

I have had two ultra sounds in the past 2 weeks already and i was told that the blood clots have increased. My worry is that the blood clots will travel throughout my body and cause a stroke or even death (a friend of mine recently passed from blood clots that traveled up to her lungs). My mother has been an RN and told me about these issues. How likely will severe blood clotting cause a miscarriage? I am just nervous .

Brief Answer:
Can cause miscarriage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If the blood clots have increased recently then the chances of miscarriage are present. This causes a compromised blood circulation to the fetus. The chances of miscarriage depend on the extent of clots and the placental attachment. Have complete bed rest. Regular monitoring by ultrasound scans is needed. You can also get your bleeding profile evaluated.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Brief Answer:
No. Rest is best for you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
There is no substitute for rest. Even if it is a light work travelling to and from the workplace can be hectic. It is best to take a week's leave. The situation is likely to improve by then.
