Are Rapid Home Tests For HIV Reliable?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Jun 2014
Question: Hi Dr
I did 5 hiv rapid home tests, the 1st one "don't remember the brand" was after 7 months after unprotected sex and was negative, 8 months later i did another 4 rapid tests using I CARE HIV test home kit and they were all negative, keeping in mind that i was away of any risk factor since that unprotected sex i mentioned above. Can i rely on those results?
Here is a hint about that I CARE test used 15 months following the exposure:

Certified by global medical standards:

WHO (World Health Organisation)
USAID (United States Agency for International Development)
TÜV ISO 13485 (ISO's International Medical Devices Standard) Certified

I don't have time to go to the clinic tt
thanks

Brief Answer:
No HIV infection; No further tests required

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

After reading your query I can understand that you have the concern for probable HIV infection after unprotected intercourse.

As I can get from your query the exposure was almost 15 months back. The first test was done after 7 months and till now you have done 4 more rapid tests.

After thoroughly interpreting the query and analyzing with diligence let me first and foremost reassure you that your status is clean and you are free form HIV infection.

To tell you medically about HIV infection:

If any non-infected person has exposure of HIV viruses by any means say for unprotected intercourse and if person acquires the infection then the HIV viruses starts multiplying in body.

These viruses are detectable after around 14 days by latest of the tests such as RNA PCR.

The immune system of the infected person starts secreting antibodies after the infection. The range of expression of these antibodies is 6- 12 weeks. It means these antibodies are detectable ealriest by aournd 6 weeks and if a person is infected then definitely will show in tests by 12 weeks of period.

So you can get that 12 weeks is the set limit where HIV infection if present then will show in all antibody tests. If after 12 weeks the tests shows negative results then is cent percent negative.

All the rapid tests or home based tests are basically based on detection of HIV antibodies. SO in your case also all the tests performed were based on detection of antibodies.

Getting above informations you can very well judge that the test performed at 7 months was sufficient to declare that you do not have HIV infection. It was further clarified by rest of 4 tests done at various intervals at 15 months of unprotected sex.

To tell you more- Though you might have confusion by its 99.8% accuracy but in my clinical experience I have not seen any false negative or positive results by nay of the antibody tests of various brands. These tests are very sensitive tests and we consider clinically to be 100% accurate.

So based on the facts provided by you in my opinion you need not to go for any further testing and can relax about the matter of HIV.

I hope these informations will help you. I will be glad to answer any further of your queries.

There is something I forgot to say. Actually I did HIV rapid home tests about 7 times. The very 1st test I did, I saw a very faint line on the T area I thought that since it is a very faint line so I'm negative . But when I did the 6 other tests even one of those six was of same company that showed the faint line, I did not see any faint lines in those 6 rapid home tests. What does that indicate?
Thanks

Brief Answer:
No furhter tests required

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome again to the forum and thanks for your follow up and further informations.

Regarding the faint line in first line and only single line of control in rest of the tests- In conditions of confusion such as faint line we always perform a repeat the test. This is the best guide way to confirm the status of the test. Many a times we observe faint line kind appearance which is actually a artifact (blood or RBCs or the chemical material) which gets deposited near the test area.

We consider a bold line to be positive and there is always a bold line in the kit for both tests as well control. If any of the kit is showing faint line then that test is considered null and void.

You can get from your rest of the tests that none of the kit showed further faint line and accordingly all tests were negative.

So going according the information provided I reassure you fully that there is no need of further testing and you can very well relax.

I will be glad to answer any further queries or if not then can close the discussion and rate the answer.

I am married now and my wife is pregnant. So no need to worry about my wife and my baby?
You know I kept on overloading my mind with thinking. Even though I'm starting to gain weight and I have no symptoms of hiv .
If the blood sample in rapid home testing is very minute droplet of blood. " That does not fill the whole diameter of the well" would this be sufficient for the test?
Thanks
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Have a healthy life ahead.

Detailed Answer:
Hello young fellow,

Welcome again to the forum.

I am really happy to know that you are now relaxed to know the basic facts.

Regarding the amount of blood- if there is proper bold and blunt line at control then there is no issues for the same. The amount of blood is quite sufficient to test it correctly.

My all best wishes for your healthy life ahead.
