Question: I believe my older sister has an eating disorder. She seems to over eat and cannot stop .....even though she suffers from obesity, diabetes, and has a heart condition. How can I help her?

Detailed Answer: Hello XXXXXXX Thanks for writing to HCM Probably your sister is suffering from Bulimia nervosa.She need consultation form psychiatrist.Treatment should be started immediately for better prognosis. Treatment usually begins with psychological treatments.Medicines can also be prescribed after evaluation.Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine can be prescribed to treat bulimia. She also need few investigations like Routine hemogram,Random blood sugar(RBS),Liver function test(LFT),Renal function test(RFT),Lipid profile,Ultrasound of abdomen,ECG in all leads.Further investigations can be done if needed. I do not believe my sister has bulemia nervosa. I think she had compulsive over eating. She does not purge.

Brief Answer: Please find detail answer below. Detailed Answer: Hello XXXXXXX Thanks for writing back Bulimia nervosa are of two types: purging and non purging. It is important to take detail history.However binge eating disorder should also be excluded. In non-purging bulimia nervosa,patient after binge eating try to offset their calorie consumption by fasting or excessive exercise whereas in binge eating disorder patient does nothing to offset their calorie consumption. You have to take her family member's in confidence and need to explain them about your sister's eating disorder which need immediate psychiatric consultation. Get well soon.
