Got Hit In Shin. Swelled To Large Bump. Put Ice. Did Aerobics. Foot Is Bruised And Purple. Problem?

I took a hit to my shin on Saturday when a line drive hit went straight for my shin. The shin immediately swelled with a fairly large bump. I soon after put ice compressions on the area but continued to play. There was some pain in the shin however it seemed to feel better when it was moving as opposed to at rest. I proceeded to go about the day and the following day (Sunday) I ran about 5km without much pain, I went to water aerobics on Monday and a high intensity step aerobic class tuesday.. When I went to put my sock on my foot to do my workout on Wednesday I noticed the side of my foot on the inner side of my ankle is now purple and bruised.. The shin is still tender to touch but no swelling.. I assume this is a result of the impact to my shin but is it normal this long after the blow and should I stay off it or continue as normal?

Radiologist 's  Response
Hello,

That purplish discoloration in your leg beside the previous site of trauma is a natural healing process.
Pain relievers could help you go on with your daily routine, however i notice that you are too busy and uses too much of your strength in all your activities, simple bumps and bruise can easily heal but it is always good to have some rest especially when an injury anywhere in your body is on its healing process.
Thank you,

Dr. Eric

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Your soft tissue hematoma might have tracked down along the fascial planes into the dependent area (your ankle) and might have produced discoloration.

The treatment of your condition involves -

- Protect the injured area from further injury by using a support or splint
- Rest the injured joint . Avoid any activity that produces pain.
- Ice packing the painful area for the first 48 to 72 hours after the injury. Apply ice wrapped in a damp towel to the injured area for 15 to 20 minutes every two to three hours during the day
- Use an elastic compression bandage around the injured area to limit any swelling and movement that could damage it further. It should be wrapped snugly around the affected area but not so tightly that it restricts blood flow.
- Keep the injured area raised and supported on a pillow to help reduce swelling.
- Use simple analgesics like aleve or advil as needed.

If your symptoms fail to improve with the above measures, consult an orthopedic surgeon for further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
