my husband has had a chronic cough for over four months. He coughs so hard, sometimes he loses his breath and gags like he will vomit (but he hasn't done that yet). I tell him it sounds like he is coughing up his lungs. His coughs are so loud, it hurts my ears to sit by him.
He finally went to a specialist two weeks ago who told him it could be GERD or sinus dripping. He prescribed two medications - one off the shelf for GERD, Prilosec, the other a prescription for the sinus dripping, Montelukast. The dr. said to take both of these for two weeks, and if not better, he should come back in and be treated with steroids (not sure what kind). My husband showed improvement for several days, but the past week he has been just as bad as before if not worse. He holds the middle of his chest, because the coughing is painful. He is tired all the time because he isn't sleeping well. He should've gone back to the doctor, but he is so reluctant to get medical help. The dr. told him to schedule a complete physical which he hasn't done. I'm frustrated and at a loss as to what to do next to help him. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
