Yes, my husband has had elevated liver enzymes on two blood tests done 6 mos ago and one yr ago. Alk photosphate was 154, and GGT was 130. He had ultrasound done one year ago and no masses or enlarged liver were seen. He possibly drank alcohol or ate fatty foods the night before the tests. He does not have symptoms of liver disease or damage. He has itching sometimes but it has been diagnosed as stress related and possible allergy to histamines. He is 67 and has aortic valve stenosis and atrial fibrillation. He takes Coumadin and also medication for hypertension, hypothyroidism, gout, and eye drops for glaucoma.
He went back to doc today and was prepared for another blood test. He has not drunk alcohol in at least a week, to see if that could make a difference in the blood test. He is not a heavy drinker at all.
Doc did NOT repeat blood tests, just ordered liver biopsy, after not even seeing him for 6 mos. I don't understand, especially since there are other safer noninvasive tests and the fact that he is on coumadin. Liver biopsy is invasive and has risks of bleeding, and also can result in false results.
I feel he should see a different gastroenterologist and have blood test repeated first, and get second opinion. Have other tests done, get second opinion.
