X-ray Shows Parathyroid Gland Behind Sternum. Pain In Lower Spine, Hips, Hot Flashes
I am seeing an endochrinologist and have recently had an survey ( x-ray ) at a nuclear medicine lab. I have had 3 parathyroid glands removed, but the x-ray showed the rogue parathyroid gland behind my sternum . I have a call in to my endochrinologist, but have not heard from him yet today. My blood test showed that I have just gone over the normal range. My symptoms might be from the situation. I feel achy in my torso, predominately my lower spine and hips and (weird, I know) I have recently had a few hot flashes. I am a person who generally ignores minor aches and pains. I do take thyroid RX and have for almost 40 years.
Dear Ma'm, as per your case history you seem to be suffering from hyper-parathyroidism, you have already undergone surgery for the removal of three parathyroid glands. Fourth gland is visible on X-ray, that makes the diagnosis more likely. Your serum calcium must be high, you must be having symptoms of hypercalcemia. You need to undergo sestamibi scan to find out functional status of the parathyroid gland and if it is hyperfunctioning you need to get it removed. But after getting all four glands removed you need to be on calcium and vitamin D replacement.
