Will There Be Knee Pain Upon Climbing Stairs While Suffering From Arthritis?
I plan to climb 100 rock hewn stairs during my trip to Greece in mid June. I ve scheduled to have a parrot s beak shaped tear of my left medial meniscus cut off this Friday. I m active and not over weight at age 74. I have a little arthritis behind the knee cap. What are the chances I will have no pain climbing the stairs in June?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Pain in knee in your condition will depend on two factors:
1. Height and irregularity of stairs -- the way you have described the surface will be irregular leading to imbalance in the knee, I suggest you wear knee cap for support.
2. Strength of your thigh muscles -- more exercises you do post removal of meniscus better it is for your knee balance. With improved knee balance you will have less pain. The chances of climbing with no pain are good if you take the precautions and follow exercises and use a knee cap.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr Gopal Goel
