Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son took a hard, loud kick to the right foot, outside. this was friday afternoon..we went to er on sun am when it was still swollen. it is now tuesday night and the goose egg on outside of foot is large..fluid filled, and swollen..should i go back to dr s or wait it out??
You have not mention that what the doctors did in ER? Did they took an X-ray? It was necessary. If not you have to refer back and have them a second look. If there is a significant local tenderness, possibility of a fractured bone exists and they should order an X-ray.
If a fracture is already ruled out, he should have relative rest, with limitation of walking and even limitation of weight bearing during walking. Also, he can use a few days of a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drug such as Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, etc...
Another method that can be used (if no fracture exists) is gentle massage of the foot in warm water with a very small amount of salt dissolved within it.
Assuming that there is no fracture, the problem should be resolved in 7-10 days. If not, further evaluation by an orthopedist and in some cases, a CT scan to find very small fractures could be necessary.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
