Why Do I Find It Difficult To Urinate Using A Catheter?

I am a 72 year old male and for the past three weeks I have not been able to urinate. I have seen a urologist who has provided me with a catheter which I use 3 times daily. I am taking Flomax medication daily and some male supplements but am still unable to urinate. My inability to urinate came on suddenly one day after a number of urges to pee and then stopped completely. Any thoughts

Hi,

I would like to know if your ultrasound, urine examination and serum PSA have been done. What was the size and weight of the prostate? In your age there is prostatic enlargement, the median lobe of it does not allow bladder emptying, there is significant post void urine which leads to UTI which further adds to frequency, hesitancy, urgency and burning micturition.

In such patients of mine, I stat some drugs which decrease prostatic size. A short course antibiotic is beneficial to counter the infection caused by frequent instrumentation. If nothing works, TURP, endoscopic surgery is the last resort to reduce the symptoms, prevent a recurrence. UTI and prevent back pressure damage to kidneys.

I would like to see your urology record to know if you have a superadded urethral stricture because that would require endoscopic optical urethrotomy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
