When Can HIV Be Detected By A Test After Potential Exposure?
Hey doctor recently I had not anal sex exactly....as I barely penetrated but rubbing of genitals...but yup I did perform oral sex with partner....so I m worried as it was unprotected would I be hiv positive.....I d antibody test within 24hrs but I got to know that it could be a false negetive.... I m totally confused over this issue. But I m not circumcised and also seems to have cuts I guess....not sure....I pee after 30 min of activity...not exactly after.... I don t know if its symptoms but maybe just the curiosity and anxiety turning my thinking towards the question whether I m infected. I asked the partner who denied infected and consistent health conscious as clamied by the partner. now if you can advice me....it would be much of a help....one more query that is it possible that rubbing of genitals open access to HIV...or deeper penetration is pre - requisite condition......I m sure partners blood didn t transfused with mine.... please help me...I m feeling terrible....and what is the most earlier test that can detect HIV after date of infection accurately or with required wieghtage....
Hello there, I understand your fear of contracting HIV. It is always better to be safe than sorry in these cases. Unprotected sexual activity puts you at great risk for acquiring this infection. Its not just blood but semen and vaginal secretions also are routes for HIV spread. Rubbing of genitals can cause infection if one partner has cuts or injuries (even minor) on the private parts. The chances of infection are greater with deeper penetration as chances of micro injury during deep penetration is higher and semen can mix with blood from these small injuries. Oral sex can also cause infection if there are cuts and open injuries in the mouth. Again its a matter of chance because even with needle directly penetrating skin the chance in 0.1%. The best time to get a confirmed report of HIV antibody testing is 3 months later. After 3 months the test is confirmatory as the window period is lapsed. Before that you can get a HIV PCR testing which can tell you if you are infected with the virus after 2-3 weeks of exposure but these tests are expensive. Be careful next time and repeat your test after 3 months to be sure. Practice safe sex. Hope this helps. Take care.
Going by your incident the risk of HIV transmission by oral sex and anal rubbing is less than 4 in 10000 and please do not worry.
HIV RNA PCR measures virus particles and is best done at the end of two weeks. This has a high accuracy but not necessarily to be done in every individual. It is done only when there is a very high chance of HIV infection and to know viral load in the recipient and to guide treatment.
Antibody tests like ELISA or western blot are recommended to be done to know the seroconversion after acquiring HIV infection.
HIV ELISA should be done at 90 days and 6 months after possible exposure. This test has to be done irrespective of the HIV PCR test being positive or negative.
In most cases ELISA will be more than 99 percent accurate when results are negative even at 6 months.
