What Is The Treatment For Severe Ankle Sprain?

I severely sprained my ankle 6 days ago. It is still swollen and the bruising covers my whole foot, toes and has made its way halfway up my lower leg. I now have a burning/tingling sensation throughout my foot and ankle. I have done the rest/ice/elevation as instructed. Ive had an xray in which initially looks fine. But ive never had an ankle injury this bad, ive had a few. Any suggestions please?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
If your ankle sprain is very bad my first suggestion is that you should get your ankle x ray as it may be a hairline fracture which may be missed by you. If there is no fracture present then I would suggest you to apply splint to ankle. You can get readymade splint or plaster of paris can also be applied. It should be kept for 2 weeks at least as ligament healing will take some time in healing so it will heal in this amount of time.
My other suggestion is that you should not put weight over this foot and also keep it elevated over a pillow so that swelling should not progressed any further.
