What Is The Treatment For Fracturing Of Fibula And Metatarsal Bone?

Hello,

I went over on my ankle 4 weeks ago today fracturing both my Fibula and a Metatarsal. I was given an air boot which I have been wearing since the day I saw the consultant.

The first two weeks I did not bear weight at all (walking with crutches) but now I will occasionally bear weight for small periods of time whilst wearing the air boot.

My next appt with the consultant is not until two weeks time (due to my travel schedule). As a general rule, and appreciating every case is different, would one normally be in a position to take the boot off and start bearing partial weight/gently exercising the ankle now to aid recovery.

The swelling around the ankle is probably a 2/10 compared to a 10/10 previously, bruising has gone and I feel no acute pain when bearing weight in the boot without crutches.

Many thanks

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
hi,
since its been 4 weeks since your injury and as u have mentioned the swelling has gone down quite a lot u can take the boot off and start bearing partial weight .
you should take the help of crutches initially when u start weight bearing. first start wlith toe touch only and if u can tolerate pain u can slowly put more weight. however u should keep in mind that the swelling might come again. u need not worry but just remember u should always try and keep your leg elevated, while sitting, keep a chair or stool in front of you and keep your leg on it and while sleeping keep your leg on two pillows.
as you rightly said u should begin exercising your ankle as well.
dont forget to see your doctor after two weeks
regards
