Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history about your husband, having a lot of painful gas in his tight extended belly, has lots of noises, feeling unwell, tired, going to loo frequently, all this going on for 18 months. He is just turned 70. GP is telling to change the diet to Fodmap for IBS. Well. IBS is least common at the age of 70 unless there is some stress and/or anxiety. Hence I would advise him the following: First of all get the stool tests done. Check for blood sugar, thyroid and kidney functions and urine tests. X-ray of the abdomen in standing position to see any intestinal obstruction. Ultrasonography of the abdomen. CT scan of the abdomen if required. All these tests along with a clinical evaluation by a Gastroenterologist will give the correct diagnosis and a plan for proper treatment to be effective and leading to cure.
