Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 3 year old daughter is almost like gasping for air in her sleep. Before going to bed she had gotten in a spot of trouble and was put in time out which resulted in her crying rather hard. I was able to settle her down before putting her to bed. However she is doing these almost gasp like breaths in her sleep like someone does after having a hard cry. It is not causing her to turn blue or anything and she is actually sleeping through it. I have woken her up and gotten her to drink a little water and have gotten her to talk and everything. She says she is ok and that it doesn t hurt but I am concerned. This is not the first time it has happened either. After a hard cry it almost always occurs. She has been taken to a doctor for this before but they found nothing wrong since by the time we got their it had stopped. I m not sure what else to do. She is happy and playing as if nothing is wrong but the breathing spasms continue although they are becoming less frequent now. It was happening 2x every five minutes or so now it is 1x every 10 minutes or so what should I do?
I suggest to get her checked by ENT specialist to rule out any abnormalities in her upper airways causing narrowing and difficulty in breathing (e.g. nasal polyps, septum deviations, etc.).
If everything is ok with her ENT organs, then, further evaluation for reflux/GERD is needed.
I advise to : - let her sleep with 2 pillows - avoid giving citrus fruits or sour foods/drinks to her especially at dinner - be careful when introducing new foods (allergy symptoms)
Hope it helped! Let me know if you have further queries! Dr.Albana
