What Is The Remedy For A Swollen Foot With A Lot Of Pain And Numbness?

My left foot is swollen and in a lot of pain, I went to the emergency room, yesturday and they said to just stay off it.
the ball of my foot is were the pain is worst? its really hurting bad. it's like a tickle, with knives and razors, and feels like it will explode at times. There is a numbness threw the whole foot now.? Should I go back to emergency?
How long should it be till the swelling goes down?
