Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Is The Prognosis For An Elderly Person With Syringe Driver?
my mom is 88 and in poor health and is having a syringe driver out in for her meds as she cannot keep anything down, I have been told that in most cases a person usually only lives a few weeks once one is fitted, we are expecting her not to be with us for very much longer but are we looking days or weeks
When a patient is in the need of a syringe driver, the health of this patient is generally not so good. So, it is the underlying condition that determines the bad prognosis and not the use of the syringe itself.
Using the syringe driver will help the patient to have better control of the symptoms such as pain and nausea/vomiting but will not worsen the prognosis of the patient.
So, I would advise you to continue with the recommendation of the medical provider and not prevent her from using the syringe driver.
I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj General and Family Physician
