What Is The Healing Period For The Sternum After A Bypass Surgery?

Hello, my husband and I we just discussing how long it takes for the sternum to completely heal after triple bypass surgery. You see, I had a triple bypass done in November 4th. 2015 and am still having some pain in the area. When I discussed this with my cardiologist he told my that the pain I was feeling was the nerves trying to knit back together. I not sure I believe this explanation... could you please elaborate on the subject. Thank you

Hello,

I have read and understood your query. Every tissue has its healing time. Mucosal skin to one inside your mouth takes 5 to 7 days to heal. Outer skin takes 7 to 14 of days to heal. Bone after a plaster of Paris you know takes almost 6 to 8 weeks. Similarly nerves may takes 6 months to an year to get healed . Such healing is possible when there is no intervening damage to same during healing process. For sternum if you have a cough off and on may delay its healing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
