What Is The Dosage Of Cetirizine HCL?

I just got home from taking my 10 month old son to the doctor. He has a bad runny nose and cough. His pediatrician had previously gave him cetrizine which I’ve been giving him the 1.5 ml a day ...well this doctor gave me a prescription for cetrizind hcl for 5ml!! Luckily the pharmacist noticed and I said oh heck no! So I’m googling it and it all says 2.5 ml is the recommended dose for a baby. I even called the doctor back and she explained yes 5ml a day. I’m so mad because I surely would have given my son that amount if it wasn’t for the pharmacist. So isn’t 5ml/mg of cetrizine a day WAY too much for my 10 month old?!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

To answer your question, yes it is. In fact the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as other important organizations recommend not giving any cold, cough, or allergy medication to any child under the age of four years. This is because of the possibility of side effects. May I suggest an alternative? Put 1-2 drops of saline solution(for example, over-the-counter NaSal Nose Drops) into each nostril to stimulate him to sneeze and cough and blow the nasal mucus to the front of his nose where you can wipe it off. You can do this before each feeding and before each nap. This is very safe and has no side effects.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
