What Is The Correct Dosage Of Sinemet For A Person Having Parkinson’s Disease?

My husband takes 25/100 mg. sinemet 3x a day. He has Parkinson s. He has been taking this for at least 5 years. He now is constantly delirious, hallucinating and is immobile. I think he is taking too much medication. Should I reduce it to 2x a day?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

There is no right or wrong dosage for this drug. It all depends on how the drug affects any particular patient. Some patients do great with low dosages, others require much higher ones. And the same applies to the side effects. His neurologist is the most appropriate doctor to decide about his treatment. The neurologist will assess the patient regarding his response to treatment and the risk for side effects. Even if he's immobile, the drug may still have something to offer in terms of carrying out daily activities like feeding him (the swallowing mechanism may be impaired in patients with Parkinson's disease), etc.

I'd discourage changing the dosage yourself!

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Panagiotis Zografakis, Internal Medicine Specialist
