What Is The Best Treatment For Hepatocellular Carcinoma While On Sorafenib?

Dear Doctors, Best greetings. My father is a 67 years diabetic man that was diagnosed wit Hepatocellular carcinoma. He is taking Sorafenib( Indian Product) 3 times daily since 3 months. I believe that Sorafenib will not remove the cancer from his liver. I learned that Sorafenib will only keep my father at a stable stage. Could you kindly advice me to the rightest way of treatment for such case. Thankfully & respectfully

Hello,

Cancer is in itself a difficult diagnosis to deal with. Your father has been started on Sorafenib for Hepatocellular carcinoma. The treatment of Hepatocellular carcinoma depends on various factors:
1) Stage of the cancer- how much it is localized or spread
2) The function of remaining liver
3) Other diseases or issues the patient has so as to deal with the overload of medicines
4) Overall performance status (Fitness) of the patient to withstand treatment

Based on all of the above a treatment plan is decided. In this case it seems that the decision to keep the patient on only Sorafenib has been taken and yes it will not completely cure the carcinoma but will prevent further increase in the disease. It would be best for you to sit with your treating oncologist to understand if any other option of treatment is available based on the stage and the current fitness level of your father.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shreya Kunder, General & Family Physician
