What Is The Ankle Ligament Sprain Recovery Time?

Susan Ammons asking for husband Chuck Ammons went thru MD symptom tracker looks like Chuck has sprain - torn ligament right ankle right side we are treating him as a sprain as of now; just happened late yesterday how long do we treat as sprain before we go to doctor? tried to see doctor today, no doctors working Friday afternoon - would have to go to ER or Urgent Care... $15 charge is worth us chatting on many questions - but I think, for this, we will treat him as a sprain through weekend - if not better will go to urgent care of doctor. thank you

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* The ankle ligament sprain usually takes a recovery period of 1-2 weeks if it is of minor degree and if much tissue trauma, it may extend for upto 3-4 weeks as well.

Factors which may delay the recovery are

- obesity and over weight with BMI over 30

- lack of rest to leg

- excess and continuous weight bearing

- uncontrolled diabetes

- excess massage of the part

- total immobility.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
