What Is Swollen And Painful Area Around The Wrist Suggestive Of?

While sitting and reading, this began. The inside of my right wrist, from the base of my thumb to about an inch above my wrist, aches. The area looks swollen and it is nearly unable to bear any weight. Movement is impacted, as well. Should I ice today? If I were to seek medical help, what type of Doctor would I look for? Anne

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Very likely you are having DeQuervain tendonitis. This is an inflammation of the tendon that passes in the area and helps us move the thumb. Repetitive movements may cause this so it is important to try to avoid movements that make this worse (if possible).

Icing it will help relieve the pain for a couple of hours. You may need a splint as well to help prevent movements that aggravate the pain.

Pain killers such as ibuprofen 600 mg every 6 hours after food may be taken as well.

If you are not better with these you may need to see your doctor and other methods to treat this can be considered (local steroid injection and rarely surgery).

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
