What Evaluation Should Be Done For A Child With A Single Umbilical Artery?
My daughter received an ultrasound yesterday at 23 weeks in her pregnancy. They were unable to find a right kidney, but also discovered she had only a single umbilical artery. Do these two findings usually go hand in hand, and what should we expect with the baby? Should she see a specialist? Will the baby be expected to have some more abnormalities? Thanks
Sorry, I can't afford to do this now. I didn't realize there was a fee involved. Thank you
Hi, I have gone through your question. A fetus with unilateral renal agenesis (absence of one kidney) and single umbilical artery have an increased risk of chromosomal anomalies. I would suggest your daughter to consult a fetal medicine specialist and get an amniocentesis done, so that the chromosomal analysis of the fetus can be done (from the amniotic fluid around the fetus). The prognosis will depend on the chromosomal anomaly present. If the chromosomes of the fetus are normal, and there are no other anomalies in the ultrasound, then you have to be in close follow uo with your doctor to detect fetal growth retardation, intrauterine death, which are found to be increased in fetus with single umbilical artery. Hope this answers your question. Wishing you both good health.
