What Dosage Of Dicyclomine Advisable For Interstitial Cystitis?

hi, I have had IC for many yrs but was in remission for a few yrs. now its back and my old urologist is no longer on my insurance. so question is re meds. I take Dicyclomine 20mg up to 3 X s day for IBS and read that it can also be of some benefit for IC. If so, what would be the dosage for IC? I am currently looking for an IC specialist here in Portland but it will take a while to get into new doc. thought my pcp could help me out w/meds till that time. omg.its lisanelson@ gmail.com

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Dicyclomine, is an anticholinergic and used to treat intestinal hyper motility and the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (also known as spastic colon).

It relieves muscle spasms and cramping in the gastrointestinal tract by blocking the activity of acetylcholine on cholinergic (or muscarinic) receptors on the surface of muscle cells. So,It is a smooth muscle relaxant.

I really doubt that dicyclomine can also be effective in the treatment of interstitial cystitis (UTI) unless you have some gastrointestinal symptoms. So there is no point in the discussion of its dosage.

You need to be detailed medical history and thoroughly clinical examination by a urologist to get ruled out any other urinary pathology apart from infection.

You might require antibiotics (quinolones specially levofloxacin in high dose or amixocillin with clavulanic acid) to combat urinary infection completely with other symptomatic treatment like analgesics,anti-inflammatory etc.

You can also take Tab.Elmiron 100 mg but after consulting your doctor.

It would be best to find an urologist in Poland for further treatment immediately and till the time take OTC pain killers.

Thanks
