What Dosage Of Biotin Is Advisable Post A Gastric By-pass Surgery?

Hi, I have had a gastric by-pass and have lost down 206 lbs to my goal weight. I have also had 5 recon. surgeries since the by-pass. My hair has thinned enormously!...to the max. Since I have to take by-pass vits the rest of my life, I have also added 10,000 mcg of Biotin. I have read on this site that the max amount is unknown. Is it ok to add an additional 10,000 mcg at night? What types of meds interfere with or does Biotin interfere with? Is there a list I can find somewhere? Of course I am using Minoxidil daily, 5%. I appreciate any info on my embarrassing situation.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Hair loss after bariatric surgery often occurs between the third and sixth month after surgery and can last 6 to 12 months or more. In the first six months, this framework can be reversed without intervention, although there is no consensus on treatment for these cases.

After six months postsurgery, nutritional causes are involved in hair loss.4 In both cases, there is no harm to the follicle, so the hair can grow back.

One must consider that the daily 1 to 2mg of biotin may provide clinical support to cases of hair loss not responding to other types of treatment.Daily consumption of 2.5mg was established as a safe limit of intake of biotin, the no observed adverse effects level.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
