General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern. Two main things I think are important:
1. Widal test does not have high specificity so is not very reliable to diagnose s.typhi and is no longer used in developed world to diagnose s. typhi. Now it is preferred to have repeated stool culture and blood culture which have a high sensitivity the first week or two of the disease and than decreases. There are also tests to check for antibodies in blood that might help.
2. If your sister comes out to have had salmonella she needs to be in hospital to be isolated because it is contagious. She might need antibiotics or not depends on her general being and if she has high fever and the provider that takes care of her has to decide it. She has to take plenty of fluids and rest as needed and needs repeated stool cultures to verify that the infection is cleared as it tends to recur or she might become a carrier. so repeat stool culture regularly the first 3 months after the disease.
Hope this is helpful and answers to your question
