What Does This Chest CT Scan Report Indicate?

I recently had a chest ct. The report mention that my pulmonary artery was mildly dialated (3.1cm). What would cause this? What is the normal diameter of the pulmonary artery? I spoke with my MD....he said he wasn t overly concerned, but prescribed an echocardiogram. What would cause this dilatation

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The normal size of the pulmonary artery that is used in most imaging centers is 2.9 cm.
If this is the value that is used at your facility then your pulmonary artery is approximately 0.2 cm larger than normal.

The change is mild.

Some of the causes of pulmonary artery dilatation include the following: (a) infections
(b)connective tissue disease eg RA, lupus etc
(c)heart defect
(D)congenital heart disease
(e)pulmonary hypertension- increase pressure in the vessels in the lungs

The cardiologist would be able to determine if it is significant and if any treatment is needed.

I hope this helps
