What Does This NT Scan During Second Trimester Indicate?

Hi Doctor, ( any gynecologist) I am in my 21 weeek of pregnancy. I underwent anomaly scan recently and they said my baby has Echogenic intracardian focus in right ventricle. My Nt scan report was normal. They asked me to get one fetal echo done in 25th week. Can you please tell me if EIF is serious?? Thanks,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hi thanks for posting on hcm.
fetuses with echogenic intracardiac focus are normal in approx 5% cases and in many they disappear by 3rd trimester that is after 28 weeks of pregnancy.
it is said that EIF is a minor marker to detect aneuploidies in fetuses like trisomy 21 called downs syndrome and 13 though not in all cases, if these conditions are being suspected there are other methods to confirm these conditions, mostly fetuses of high risk pregnancy having EIF are prone to have these conditions, high risk are those like mothers with increased age , family history of such conditions.
we can't predict the outcome 100% at this stage i would recommend you to get echo done and wait for the results.
hope this could be of some help to you.
regards
